NEWS: NEW AIR SERVICE TO KAMCHATKA! Vladivostok Air lines will fly from Anchorage to Kamchatka every Monday starting July 7 and ending September 15. This is a Japanese airline that has the ability to do this right. All the outfitters and lodges have met with them and ar satisfied that they will live up to their promises.
We are hosting the week of July 28- August 4th for a float trip on the Voyampolka river which should be prime time for dry fly fishing and big rainbows. If you would like to join me on this trip drop me an email - edblank@mac.com the price is $4500 USD/person and we will fly from Petropavlovsk to the bottom of the river via a fixed wing plane where we will meet a helicopter to fly to the headwaters. The fixed wing allows us to get farther into the wilderness before we run the expense of the helicopter. This area has been fished just a few times.
There is only one reason to fish in Kamchatka and that is: fly fishing for rainbow trout as big as your leg that eat dry flies! ( actually, the ones as big as your leg actually eat mice or ducklings). The salmon fly fishing is great but the jewels of the fishery are the rainbow trout, throw in trophy char and a new species - Khundza, and you realize a week long fly fishing trip to Kamchatka is way too short.

There are now several choices opening up in Kamchatka with a few different fly fishing outfitters offering dependable trips to this unexplored territory. The key to a dependable trip is the combination of American oversight with a well connected partner from Russia. There are a few Russian only companies that offer fly fishing float trips that are not quite ready for prime time . My job is to help you decide which one is best for you and which ones to avoid.
The basics start with the decision as to what kind of trip you want: A full service fly fishing lodge that uses jet boats to ferry you to the best fishing, A more rustic tent camp Almost a lodge) or a standard float trip with mobile camps where tents that are set up each night. For the wanderlust fly fishing addict we have added a flyout trip this year as well. From a mobile tent camp you can fly to a different river every day but have the benefit of a float as you are camped on prime spots. The helicopter stays with you the entire trip!
Kamchatka has a lot to offer to the fly fishing enthusiast - fly fishing the way it was in Alaska over 25 years ago is the best way to describe it. Russia is the last frontier for freshwater fly fishing for wild, native rainbow trout, steelhead and salmon.
