San Pedro Hotel Information
Flyfishing Belize, Frequently Asked Questions

relax on the deck or flyfish the flats of BelizeWhere do we fly to? You fly to Belize City, Belize.  It is serviced out of Miami and Houston by Continental and American Airlines.  The trip prices will include the flight from Belize City to Ambergris Caye.

Do I need a passport? Yes, no visa is needed in advance, but you do need a passport.

What language to they speak in Belize? This is the former British Honduras and everyone speaks English as well as Spanish, Creole or Garufina.

Is the food  and water safe? In San Pedro you should always be concerned with food and water Safety.  Always Drink bottled water.  Go to restaurants that look like they cater to tourists, they will be the ones that are sure to wash salads with purified water, serve purified ice etc.   If the place looks like a local hangout for San Pedroites you may want to nix the salads and drink only bottled water with no ice (the local beer is always safe!).    When in doubt go to the next restaurant.

What about money in Belize? One US dollar is worth 2 Belizean dollars . All stores accept US dollars or Belizean dollars.   The prices everywhere on the island will be in Belizean dollars.

How is the Fishing? I like this part of Belize because it has a good mix of fish.  There are bonefish galore, but having tarpon year round ( on flats no less), and permit year round makes this place fun.  A good bonefish day with an experienced flyfisher is 15 fish. A poor day that same person can expect 3 fish.   It also depends on the type of fishing you do.  I like stalking individual fish in very shallow water so a daily total for me might only be 7 fish.  In other situations the guide may stake you off near a school of a thousand fish where you may catch 10 in an hour, but it is virtually blind casting.  Tarpon landings are few and far between.  That's why the term "jumped a fish" is used.  Hook them, watch them jump 5 feet in the air,  and throw the hook.

Will my non-fishing family like it here? If they like warm Caribbean spots with lots of things to do they should love it.  The Tides trip does not have as many things like pools an d watersport equipment, no tennis court etc but they are clean, modern rooms with plenty of hot water and a refrigerator.   You can bicycle up and down the beach for miles. Or go on one the many pay as you go excursions like diving, The manatee snorkel tour, the Mayan ruin tour - the list goes on and on.   If they like warm weather and a resort that will pamper them, they will love it here. It is hard to believe they are all happy and you can fish like a madman!  So you can do all the tours but there is less to do right on the hotel property.  On the other hand being in the town of Sam Pedro means hanging out a couple of the cool bars in town, maybe there is some live music or something else going on.  The night life is more active here than on the northern island where El Pescador, Journeys End and The Sundiver are located.

Are there any unexpected charges? The price for the trip includes the air transfers from Belize city to the San Pedro, , all taxes, fishing license, lodging, 3 meals a day, and even gratuities for the staff.   The only other charges not included are:  a taxi ride from the airstrip to the Tides ($5-10), a $20 departue tax at Belize City when you leave the country, a tip for your fishing guide ($25/day/boat)  and all food.

What shots do I need? The CDC recommends lots of vaccines for Belize because they are speaking about the entire country.  Some areas have no sanitation at all and no waste disposal at all. You will be more at risk in those areas. Most all of the diseases on the CDC list such as Typhoid are completely eliminated by normal sanitation and waste treatment.  The only legitimate risk on their list for visiting SAn Pedro is Malaria which is carried by certain mosquitoes.  Since we do have some mosquitoes it is possible that Malaria could be contracted while visiting us.  The risk is indeed small but there.  Hepatitias A is on the list and although rare in this area you should consult your doctor about  a vacine or the anti malaria pills if you have any concerns.
